 LION IN THE STREETS

Lew Harris, who lives on Lewis Street across from the park reported to me, this week, that he saw a lion twice , once on his deck, about 20 feet away and again in his yard. The lion vaulted a 4 foot fence and slinked away through the lot next to Lew’s. These sightings were this week and last week. The last sighting, reported to me by Ernie Childress' was of a lion he saw last month walking down North Street. I reported the lion sighting by Ernie to NDOW and was told that the lion was probably just passing through. Doesn’t sound like that to me. Lions are indiscriminate killers. They are looking for small animals: this includes pets and children. They usually hunt at dusk, but can be seen and have killed at other times. If you are leaving food for your pet (or for strays) outside stop doing it ! The lion is in town to feed. If he comes to town to feed on your pet’s food and sees a child, there might be a disaster. Again; Stop leaving food outside for your pet.

TO AVOID ATTACK

  • DO NOT JOG OR BIKE IN AREAS KNOWN TO HAVE MOUNTAIN LIONS or where lions have recently been seen. These activities are known to induce a mountain lions predatory instinct to attack. If these activities are undertaken it is recommended that the person is accompanied by a large breed dog.
  • GO IN GROUPS and MAKE PLENTY OF NOISE to reduce your chances of surprising a lion, when you walk or hike in mountain lion country. A sturdy walking stick is a good idea; it can be used to ward off a lion.
  • KEEP CHILDREN CLOSE TO YOU and within your sight at all times. Talk with children about lions and teach them what to do if they meet one.
  • DO NOT APPROACH A LION, especially one that is feeding or with kittens. Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape.
  • STAY CALM when you come upon a lion. Talk calmly yet firmly to it. Move slowly.
  • STOP OR BACK AWAY SLOWLY, if you can do it safely. Running may stimulate a lion's instinct to chase and attack. Face the lion and stand upright.
  • DO ALL YOU CAN TO APPEAR LARGER. Raise your arms. Open your jacket if you are wearing one. If you have small children, protect them by picking them up so they won't panic and run.

  • If the lion behaves aggressively, THROW STONES, BRANCHES or WHATEVER YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON without crouching down or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly. Your goal is to convince the lion that you are NOT prey and that you may be a danger to the lion.
  • FIGHT BACK if a lion attacks you. Lions have been driven away by prey that fights back. People have fought back with rocks, sticks, caps or jackets, garden tools and their bare hands successfully. Remain standing or try to get back up!

Charlie,

There are a lot of parents concerned with the way Beatty High School is being run. My daughter and I have fought the previous and current Principal over a teacher who for years has yelled at the kids called them names in front of others in the room. She speaks Spanish to the Mexicans heckling the white kids. She is unable to get all grades in the computer on time, so a lot of children have D's & F's because of her. I believe that the Counselor and Principal are taking advantage of this fact to punish the kids, because it still continues today. I can go on and on about the office staff up there, but will save it for the special school board meeting I'm trying to get arranged.

In response to the Principal of our Beatty schools. The teachers being graded- I agree. They should be punished just as much as the students. For example; some teachers do not grade papers, or enter grades, into the computer until Monday when the grades are supposed to in on Friday. They prefer to do grading over the weekend so when the time comes to find out if a student is eligible for “activities”, the students don’t have a grade and they are punished for it. That is the fault of the teacher not the student. If the students have to do the work in a timely fashion, shouldn’t the teachers? Everyone needs to be more responsible. And for Special Ed students they only have to show up to pass. I’m not giving my name only because my child/children will be punished because I have an opinion. I’ve seen it before. Thank you. A concerned Parent.

Mr. Cook,

I do not care to respond to any anonymous complaints nor do I wish to be published in your paper.  If someone has a complaint that is legitimate, they can come to me in person.  I do not need to you help me resolve issues. (Ed. I asked Ms. Hills if she wanted to respond. This was her answer)
