WHY SPEND IT?

I am an ignorant man! There are a lot of things that I don’t understand. Last week Pam Webster (Nye County Acting Comptroller) presented the budget for the next fiscal year. (Why can’t they just say year?) It is a lot of money and all were present to see how much their share was. There are no penalties for not spending our tax dollar. Doesn’t it make more sense to not spend the money and then reduce our taxes appropriately next year? But instead our Town Board will spend it on nonsensical things that you and I do not need? Come to the Town meetings. Maybe we can’t do anything about the money Washington spends, but we should be able to

control what our town spends! You and I know how much we are going to personally receive next year and that it is (hopefully) enough to cover our expenses, with a little left for the kitty. Why doesn’t our Board think the same way?

Charlie: You and I might have met along the streets of Beatty during the week of April 6th to 9th as I drove continuously during the daylight hours in search of my Daughter/Granddaughters beloved dog Belle. The Golden Retriever that pulled free from my Grandson on April 6th in the morning. As you know she was found Saturday morning April 17th by a resident of Beatty (Ed. Fred McMillan) and returned safely to the hands of my Daughter Tracy, who was again in Beatty to pass out some flyers. Belle was badly injured on her haunches and has a broken toe from the time she spent, God only knows where?

She has been to the vet and repaired as best that they could. My Granddaughter thinks we need Dr. Doolittle to translate Belles Dog language to English so she could tell us all about her adventure in and around Beatty by herself for 11 days. If you have a little space in your weekly paper please express my gratitude to all the fine people of Beatty who took their time to search for Belle. I have been all around these United States, but do not know of another town that has as much love for total strangers as the small town of Beatty, Nevada. You, yourself spent countless hours driving in and around Beatty, The young Lady in the Trailer Park up the street from the Motel spent hours on her Quad driving the ravines and dirt roads inaccessible by car, The folks in The Stagecoach, Motel 6, The trash men, Sheriff, delivery people, all the business people that searched in vain for Belle are certainly people I am proud to have met if only as I passed by looking for my Granddaughters Dog. Put the word out if you can that my family truly respects the families of Beatty and we are all proud to have met  them. Thank You, George Mann

WE HAVE A NEW PRINCIPAL (WHO HAS SOME RADICAL IDEAS)

Karen Hills believes in punishment for underachievers. She has instituted a system that places students who cannot, or will not; keep their grades above a “d”, into a category that does not allow them to participate in any school activities. EXAMPLE A male senior placed a comment on the internet comparing Ms. Hill to Hitler. For this Ms. Hill suspended him for 9 days. Even when she was told by a County official to reinstate him, she refused. Since this boy has missed school for nine days, (According to my information) his grades have fallen into the “D” category and he will not be allowed to attend his senior prom. To not attend your senior prom is a significant thing. The prom is the most (or at least one of the most) important events of the senior year. To not be able to attend is a punishment beyond, in my opinion, what the incident required. To sum up: You cannot achieve academic success by punishment. You must, instead, find another way to guide students to success. This will take more time and is not as easy as putting them in a category separating them from their peers. I do not believe that punishing failure will achieve positive results, but finding a better way to allow students to succeed will.

I ask this question of parents. Are you in agreement with this policy? I will print your responses. I believe Ms. Hill could have handled the Hitler Incident better. Maybe a sense of humor would help. Lastly I would pose this question to Ms. Hill: Do you believe that teachers should be graded and if they were, should their wages reflect their grades? Now, when a student fails, this has no adverse effect on the teacher. The tragedy is that the state has given the power of the education of our children to people who, apparently,  do not realize how their decisions can affect the lives of these children and may irrevocably alter the course of their futures. Teachers should accept their responsibility and stop blaming parents. In my opinion; this sort of harsh discipline is expected in a military school but not in a public school.

Lastly, I would ask this question. Do the seniors who get d’s and f’s, graduate?

Karen Hills - Beatty Schools Principal

I am not sure which student you are speaking of and even if I knew, I could not provide any specific information.  That information is confidential.  I do wonder how you received information regarding a confidential situation with a student and am surprised that you would choose to print something regarding a confidential situation in your paper.  However, I can tell you that I have NEVER been instructed by my supervisor to release a student from a suspension.  I HAVE BEEN given the option by my supervisor in the past to EXPELL a student and I chose NOT TO.

I will forward on to you the parent letter I sent out last November which explains the policy I implemented at that time that has been in force since and supported by the district.  I do not have a copy of it here on my

computer at home.  Just a side note on the policy - - - The percentage of students at the high school with D's  and/or F's has decreased to approximately 20% each week and our Basketball coach received Nevada State 1A coach of the year in part due to his adherence to strict academic policies as well as his excellent coaching abilities.

(Ed.) I say that it is a mistake to militarize public schools. The responsibility of a public school is to present curriculum is such a way that will allow students to absorb it. When you instead, set arbitrary standards, and then expect students to achieve them, you do not take into account a student’s inability to do so. What are the criteria for mentally deficient students? Are they graded the same way?
