Ernie Childress saw a cougar Tuesday at 10:30 pm last week  It was walking down North street in front of  his house, near the Water Board (on North Street West of Avenue B) He heard his dog barking and when he went outside to see what the dog was barking at, he saw the cougar. This is the third reported sighting in this area.

Cougars (mountain lions, pumas) have a range of from 10 square miles to over 200 square miles depending on the availability of prey. (food) The cougar feeds mostly on small game, that includes pets. It has been known to attack, and kill, small children and adults.

1991 - Nevada Test Site, north of Las Vegas, Nevada - Mary Saether, was attacked by a 120-pound female mountain lion. She suffered minor cuts and received 21 stitches on her head, right arm, and back. The cougar crept up on Saether and two male companions and attacked before they were aware of its presence. The two men beat the lion with their cameras forcing it to release Saether. A Wildlife Services Specialist arrived the next day. As he was doing a preliminary check, he heard noise in a tree and turned to find the lion charging.  The man had only enough time to draw his handgun and shoot the lion at point blank range. The lion was found to be in good health. (U. S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services, Reno, Nevada and various news reports)

Cougars usually hunt at night. They sneak up on their victim, kill it by biting around the head and neck, and then drag it off. For your safety, avoid the area around the Water Board and north of the Stagecoach. The Cougar may be preying on the Burro herd North and east of town (this is just speculation). Stay away from these areas, especially at night. NDOW (Nevada Department of Fish and Wildlife) has been informed and it is hoped they can capture and remove it from the area before we have a tragedy.

LOST DOG

Travelers from California, last their dog in the vicinity of Motel Six on Tuesday this week. It is a female Golden Retriever answering to the name of Belle. She was spotted Wednesday morning behind Motel Six by construction workers. The owners had to leave last Friday. If you find Belle, please call Tracy Buss at 951-233-2533. Belle is a well cared for and much loved family pet. Your help will be appreciated. Reward offered.

Truck Stop? This building is on Airport Road.

The builder is Edward Homes (Pahrump). The owners name is Brinkman. (Yeah. Just like in “Ghost Busters”). There are two structures being built now. The obvious one is the Brinkman residence. There is a basement being built behind the house. The contractor says the plan is for a 10unit motel near the basement that will include a bar,  restaurant and pool. Construction on the house should be completed by August.  There is speculation of further construction that may include a truck stop.

BUT NOT IN BEATTY Have you noticed that the anti-Bank of America sign is gone?

warning

A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

WHY SPEND IT?

I am an ignorant man! There are a lot of things that I don’t understand. Last week Pam Webster (Nye County Acting Comptroller) presented the budget for the next fiscal year. (Why can’t they just say year?) It is a lot of money and all were present to see how much their share was. There are no penalties for not spending our tax dollar. Doesn’t it make more sense to not spend the money and then reduce our taxes appropriately next year, but instead our Town Board will spend it on nonsensical things that you and I do not need? Come to the Town meetings. Maybe we can’t do anything about the money Washington spends, but we should be able to about what our town spends! You and I know how much we are going to personally receive next year and that it is (hopefully) enough to cover our expenses, with a little left for the kitty. Why doesn’t our Board think the same way?

It's right on Main Street Beatty looking west. The building on the right is the old Beatty Mercantile which is where KC's parking lot is now. The building behind the tree is the hotel that still is there. The 'GARAGE' on the extreme left is the 'original' Rebel station. Behind the two cowboys on the left you can see the U of the Exchange Club. The hotel between the garage and exchange was called the "California Hotel". The real photo without the cowboys was taken in 1934. (Photo by Mark Holloway)
