SANDSTORM OVER RHYOLITE MARCH 31ST

I Guess that old saying, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb”, doesn’t work in Beatty

BIGHORN SHEEP CONTINUE TO SUCCUMB TO PNEUMONIA

Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) biologists continue to find bighorn sheep that have died due to complications brought on by pneumonia in the East Humboldt Range and in the Ruby Mountains.

“We have found 74 dead bighorn sheep in the East Humboldt’s (hunt unit 101) and 28 in the Ruby Mountains (hunt unit 102) for a total of 102 sheep over the last 4 months,” says Caleb McAdoo, NDOW big game biologist. “Unfortunately, this disease event isn’t showing any signs of abating.”

Because of issues like this and other concerns, NDOW biologists and veterinarians have put together a plan to monitor and study the sheep for the next few years. They have tagged and placed radio collars on a number of sheep as well as administering a broad spectrum antibiotic to some of the animals.

“Unfortunately, there is no known cure, or treatment for pneumonia in bighorn sheep,” said McAdoo, “but we are going to use the data collected from this disease event to assist in future outbreaks.”

With the coming of warmer weather and snowmelt, the public is anxious to get out of the house. But McAdoo is asking the public to please give the bighorn sheep space and avoid the areas they are in so as not to stress them.

“We are still within a critical time for these animals,” says McAdoo, “as the weather warms and forage starts to green up, they have a chance to build some strength. Any extra energy demands placed on the sheep may decrease their chances of survival.”

An unnamed person gave me the wrong spelling for the new Doc’s name. It’s Darren not Barrly.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

The BTAB (Beatty Town Advisory Board) and BHW (Beatty Health and Welfare) are circulating an information mailing that asks 1. Are you in favor of BHW turning over the Clinic and all Beatty Health and Welfare properties and assets to the Town of Beatty (Nye County)? The answer is NO.  What would the Town do with this responsibility? There is no one on the BTAB trained (or for that matter) or has the time to run the Clinic.

 2. Are you in favor of building/purchasing a new medical facility in Beatty? NO. The County (Town) is strapped now. Where would the money come from and even if it was available, how would the Town (County) then afford to run it?

 3. Would you like to see the Beatty Clinic upgraded to an “Independent Center for Emergency Medical Care? I am the first to say that we need such a facility and also the first to say that if we have learned nothing but this: we have only to look at what happens when the government takes over anything. In most cases, the costs skyrocket and the efficiency goes down.

CONCLUSION. We have to centralize our facilities. We have one school that serves just Beatty. We have one school that serves just Amargosa. Why not have one school that serves both? Why not the same thinking for Medical Facilities? Having a Clinic here is a nice idea but how many times have you heard of the inefficient way it is operated and the fact that it will not serve injured people? I say this. Centralize and transport. You may not like the inconvenience, but the fact is that it is all that we can afford.

MINOR STING?

It is alleged that the Sheriff’s Office ran a sting operation here last week. The cops won’t verify it so I am relying on information from those involved. According to Alpheus Bruton (owner of the Beatty Club): two women came into his club and the youngest one, who spoke with a foreign accent, asked for two margaritas. Alpheus asked for id and the young woman produced hers. Alpheus noted that it showed her to be 18. Alpheus pointed this out to her and asked her age and was told that she was truly 18. Alpheus then told her that he could not serve her and they both left.

Alpheus suspects that these two were the “bait’ running the “sting” operation. My source claims that only the Rebel and the Beatty club were not cited.

LOST DOG

Travelers from California, have last their dog in the vicinity of Motel Six on Tuesday this week. It is a female Golden Retriever answering to the name of Belle. She was spotted Wednesday morning behind Motel Six by construction workers. The owners have to leave on Friday. If you find Belle, please call Tract Buss at 951-233-2533. Belle is a well cared for and much loved family pet. Your help will be appreciated.
