VEA DISTRICT 3 MEETING

VEA had its district meeting here at the Community Center Wednesday the 17th. Only 15 users showed up out of 444 possible. That was good for me as the odds of me winning the door prize went up and I subsequently won $50 (to be deducted from my next bill). Tom Husted talked about the successes of last year and how he is working to keep costs down,  VEA has sought and gotten early retirement from about 20 employees. They have also frozen wages for 2 years. (Ed. I wonder if they will get raises after this years rate increase of almost 7%?)

GOOGLE POWER METER

Google Power Meter is a free software tool that allows you to view your home's energy consumption from your personalized iGoogle homepage. Using information from utility smart meters and in-home energy management devices, Google Power Meter helps you to save money and use less electricity. (Ed. This is VEA’S latest innovation that is supposed to let the user track his power consumption by each appliance. It requires a computer and internet access. According to Tom Husted, it will make it possible to track and control your appliances one by one).

MASSACRE AT BEATTY MERCANTILE

Last week, I ran an article about animal control; this is what happens when animal owners don’t take responsibility for their pets. There are a lot of animals running loose in town. Most of them are harmless, but a few are feral. The pictures further down, show what happens when these feral animals are allowed to run loose. When Kathi Swann came to work Friday the 19th at 8:00 AM, two dogs had dug under the fenced area where they had been keeping a turkey (won in the BVFD raffle and was being stored there) and a goat. The turkey had its throat torn out and the dogs were attacking  the goat when Kathi got them to stop and chased them out of the pen.

One of the dogs was a pit bull and the other a  wolf-husky mix. The pit bull was owned by Tony Diferdinando,

residing at the Phoenix Inn. The wolf mix was owned by Ernie Jenerou, formerly the bartender for Kc’s Outpost.  According to Tony; he heard a scratching at the door of his room. When he opened the door his dog (Blue) ran off with the wolf mix.

According to Kathi, the fine for “animal at large” is $681. Tony stated that he previously owned the mix and being unable to keep it, turned it over to our Sheriff. The dog was impounded and then turned over to another Beatty couple who gave the dog to Ernie. Ernie kept it tied up behind the Outpost. (You probably heard it barking all night)

I’m sure that we all wonder why these tragedies happen. Is it because our officials are incompetent? Is it because there are not enough of them? Is it possible to have enough animal control people available to prevent these tragedies? The answer is that we could not afford to have people standing around waiting on us.(but the ones we have could be more efficient and caring) We citizens must act to prevent irresponsible pet owners from allowing their pets to run loose. If you see this happening, call animal control. Call them every time you see this happening, even if it is every day. If you can, try to identify the pet’s owners. They may be your friends, but they must be forced to act responsibly. Do your duty! Don’t let this happen again. Because of this tragedy, both dogs were euthanized. We can only hope that the BTAB will try to find a solution to prevent this tragedy from being repeated. FYI The goat has been patched up but has a broken leg and is facing an uncertain future.

 EDITORIAL

Last week, I got an email from a woman who complained about the way Erika Gerling is running the Little League. Her complaint boils down to Junior High age students are not allowed to play because, according to the writer, Erika will not allow any more kids into the League because she doesn’t have time for any more kids. The writer claims that Erika shouldn’t be on the BTAB if she hasn’t enough time to run the Little League properly. I am not publishing her letter as she made many personal statements and complaints using strong language against Erika. I finally was able to reach Erika, after many attempts, and she responded that she can only form teams in the age group that responds. She claims that no coaches responded last year to older age groups.

Some people say that animals have no feelings. I hope that, in this case, it was true.

TOWN MEETING

Wednesday, the 25th, 6:00 PM. There was supposed to be a welcome to the Town for our new Doctor, but according to Nevada Health Center, he hasn’t decided to take the job yet. However, Rene Younghans introduced him as the new Doc and welcomed him to the Town. (Ed. I will clear this up) Rene also announced that Carrie Radonski (Owns, with her Husband George, Beatty Mercantile) will take over as the Town Clerk on April 1st.

Ryan Tweney (Beatty Habitat Committee) announced that the Apfel family donated two lots at the end of second street and pine to the Nature Conservancy who then got Soil Tech to commit to clean up the site and make it into a little park as a rest area for hikers and also to advertise what can be done in the river.
