Hi

My wife and I spent a few days in Beatty last month and used it as a  base for our exploits in Death Valley. While there I came across your  newspaper with the article "What will bring tourists to town?". Here are a few ideas from our perspective as tourists. Use the natural resources you have at your disposal and leverage them  to your advantage. What resources are those? Death Valley National Park, Rhyolite and the various ghost towns in the area, and perhaps the Bare Mountains. How?

You need to provide services that tourist’s ant/need to use. You  should look to establish a Jeep Rental business, a camping supply  rental business, maybe guides available to take tourists in the back  country of the area, maybe even flights of the area with airport  nearby. Of course these are not new ideas. It turns out you can find  much of these things in Stovepipe Wells, in the valley. But that place

is remote, expensive, and I imagine a damn sight hotter in the summer.  And just because they do it does not mean it won't work for you. On  the contrary it means it most likely will work for you. They are  proven business markets. There is demand for these kinds of services. So give me a place that I can go to and maybe rent a Jeep, drive the  back roads, camp for a night or two, explore not only Death Valley but  also the areas around it and I would likely choose to base my  activities in Beatty. Your town has so much to work with. You have Las

Vegas only a couple of hours away .. you have best access to Death  Valley, various ghost towns, you're also close to area 51, Yucca  Mountain, and maybe you can find a way to promote/use the Bare Mountains to your  advantage. You need to increase ties with the Death Valley Park, Nevada Tourism

Board, and similar organizations. Add a section in your website for  surrounding things to see in addition to Ryolite and Death Valley.  Titus Canyon is one that you should promote. Perhaps things in the  Bare Mountains but I don't know much about them. Try to find things to  the east so that prospective tourists will be able to say, I'll see  Death Valley, but I would also like to see .. ". That will make Beatty  the center of their trip activities.

All of this is just scratching the surface. If someone wants more  ideas/thoughts give me a call. I don't hove much time but I do have  some more ideas.

KC's Outpost is Super!

It's been a while since our trip to Beatty - we were there at the end of October. Went hiking in Death Valley    and was there for Beatty days. We stayed at the casino hotel and ate there the first night. From the second night  on, we were hooked on KC's. Both Karl and Carol were so friendly and welcoming that we didn't bother to go anywhere else. The food and drink were really good and also reasonable. We also thought the folks that went in there were friendly and struck up more than a few conversations. Next time we are in town, we will be stopping at KC's first!

BGID MEETING (January 7th)

The BGID feels that the playground equiptment is outdated and may be hazardous, according to today’s insurance standards. They are looking into replacing the old equiptment with something that is more up-to-date. There are pictures of this proposal at the BGID office. The first step is to apply for a grant.

Lew Harris has received permission to move the mining hardware from Jack Crowell’s property in back of the Exchange Club Motel to his proposed park on E Street. He is also pursuing removal of the Tamarisk trees from the same place.

The BGID has begun the first step in constructing 20 horse shoe pits at the old paint ball courts. They will also fence in the property and add trees. The new courts should attract players from around the country. It is hoped that these tournaments will be held five times a year.

The BGID has also voted to allow dogs on leashes in Cottonwood park. There will be signs located around the park announcing the leash law and violators will be prosecuted.
