LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Unfortunately not everyone is an animal lover. And it surely shows in the area of Hoyt and C Street. The horrendous acts of the person in that area have caused much heartache and undue suffering to pets and their owners. In case that person is unaware of the law, let me educate you. Cruelty to animals is a felony in the state of Nevada. I have lost a precious pet to your actions and even worse, have had to watch other animals suffer through shots to the head, acid, poisoning etc. When I can prove what you are doing (and I am watching, believe me) I promise to bring charges against you and will press those charges as far as the law allows. And I will continue to do so as long as I live. How dare you! No matter whom you are, to think that you are above the law. See you in court; if you’re inhumane, unacceptable actions continue.

 Hi Charley,

Could you please put a note in your next ‘News’, that the pictures taken of the kids @ Santa night are available at the town office, also, could you remind the townspeople to submit their applications for the area plan committee that the BTAB is wanting to create… (it was that bulk mailing that recently went out)

Thanks a lot and Happy New Year J Janet Rogers

FYI

People have been asking me about the SHERIFF BLOTTER and why I don’t show it anymore. I  show it when there are arrests in Beatty. For the past three weeks, there haven’t been any.

COMMUNITY

I talked to Benny last Saturday. I was curious about the new foundation on the South side of the Sourdough. Benny took the time to show me some pictures of the intended renovations he and Ruth are planning. Apparently the front of the building will be converted to look as it would have at the turn of the century. 20th that is)

There will be a covered porch with a boardwalk and above that an arched façade. Benny is not in any hurry and will take his time to see that it is done to their satisfaction.

V. E. A. GOES CRAZY

VEA Board Members (Ed. Who, incidentally, made $650 just for attending the meeting) voted to increase rates an average of 6%. This increase will become effective January 1, 2010.The average residential rate will increase 7%.This will be the first rate hike since January 2006.Tom Husted, VEA CEO, explained that costs to produce electricity have increased 18.5% (Ed. Tom’s salary is $222,000+  50% for perks totaling $337,500/year) In addition to Tom’s outrageous salary, VEA employees earn $25-$37/hour. VEA will pay out $4 million towards the early retirement of 14 employees. VEA is offering employees who meet age requirements one year of severance pay, five years added to their pension, a lump sum payment for sick pay and vacation time and medical insurance until they turn 65 years old. Tom claims that this early retirement is what is causing the rate increase.

Ed. I don’t claim to be an economist, but it doesn’t take one to see that VEA is overspending in the hope that increasing our rates will pull them out of their bad business practices. (Ed. I wonder if Tom is going to retire and take his “Golden Parachute”.)

WHAT IS A CO-OP?

A cooperative is a business. In many ways it's like any other business; but in several important ways it's unique and different. A cooperative business belongs to the people who use it – people who have organized to provide themselves with the goods and services they need.
These member-owners share equally in the control of their cooperative – they meet at regular intervals, hear detailed reports and elect directors from among themselves. The directors in turn hire management to manage the day-to-day affairs of the cooperative in a way that services the members' interests.
Members invest in shares in the business to provide capital for a strong and efficient operation. All net savings (profits) left after bills are paid and money is set aside for operations and improvements are returned to co-op members.

EDITORIAL COMMENT –Tom Husted is the CEO of a co-op. His job is to serve us. He, instead (with the blessing of OUR Directors), is enriching himself. This, among other crimes, is what cost Jeffrey Skilling of ENRON, to be sent to prison for 24 years. Tom may not be ripping us off in the same way that Jeffrey Skilling did, but he is taking advantage of his position to enrich himself and he should be ashamed of the way he is running our CO-OP.
