Charlie:

I noticed two weeks ago that I was missing DVDs from my collection.  Ernie Childress and I were talking a week or so ago and he checked his collection and found he was missing VHS tapes and DVDs.  My DVDs have numbers on them, showing their storage location in my file.  Ernie's tapes and DVDs have E.C. printed on them.  The only people who are known to have been in both Ernie's house and mine were ------ and -----.  I am informed ----- has left town.  When Ernie asked to see ------- movie library, he refused.  Today, I found a plastic bag of DVDs hanging from my fence.  There were 7 of my DVDs with numbers on them and a VHS tape which had E.C. printed on it.  Ernie's tape was mistakenly returned to me with some but not all of my DVDs.  I am still missing (that I know of) fourteen (14) DVDs and possibly VHS tapes too.  Time to warn citizens of Beatty to be careful buying DVDs and let me know if they buy or are given any DVDs with a number written on them with a sharpie. Jay Harvey

BTAB MEETING

There were several residents who were brave enough to take the podium and speak their minds. Diane Zapulla, a new resident (2 months) complained about the semi’s running their engine’s when they are resting here. Diane feels that they are polluting the air and that there should be a regulation restricting the amount of time that they leave their engines running. Ed. Welcome to Beatty Diane. We are delighted that you have chosen to live with us. I am sorry that I have to rain on your parade. This is the real old west. We (most of us) like it the way it is. We do not have building codes, building permits, zoning laws etc. We, pretty much, go our own way without interference from Government and we like it that way. I sincerely hope you will not try to change things that make our lives simpler and I sincerely hope that you will lay back, relax and be happy here.

The BTAB is looking for volunteers to create an Area Plan Committee. These people would be representative of all economic and social groups and would plan the town’s future.

The Board passed a resolution to get four seasonal flags to be mounted on the lamp posts along the highway.

The BVFD asked for and received $11,000 for fireworks for the Fourth of July celebration.

Kay Handy (BTAB member) wanted to thank the many people who donated toys for the kids Christmas. According to Kay, it was an impressive showing of love and caring for children.

CORRECTION

It was my understanding that NHC (Nevada Health Center) owned the Clinic building. The fact, I am now told, is that it is owned by BH&W (Beatty Health & Welfare) and that explains why it deteriorated to the condition it is now and may have to be replaced.

CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS

It would appear that the ‘Girls Club’ has had a good idea. That’s the only reason I can think of that has lit up the Christmas spirit of this town. There are a lot more decorations up this year than there were last year. I drove Main Street Thursday night and noticed the lamp posts were displaying their decorations. All along the street businesses were decoration their store fronts. The Atomic Inn is specially lavish. There are a few dissenters. Most of the businesses that don't show  Xmas spirit are owned by non-residents and this goes along with their participation in all civic events. These ‘Aliens’ don’t attend any meetings. They don’t want to have a say in our growth (unless it affects them). They are only interested in their profits. Why then, should we be spending out tax dollar to promote them? I believe we should concentrate on promoting tourism for our resident businesses. How about it BTAB?

This is the first sign of winter at the pond. I have seen the pond frozen over once before, except for a patch over the spring. We may see it again this year. There are only two ducks and one goose left, I am sorry to say. I realize that there are some non-animal lovers that will scoff at this: but, what do you think the two remaining ducks feel. Do they miss their brother? Are they thinking,” am I next/”

THE BOUNDARY QUESTION

Senior Deputy District Attorney Marla Zlotek finally came up with an answer: Beatty? What Beatty?

"Beatty has never been formed in accordance with the law. It's an unformed, unincorporated town." Ed. Now what? One of the options available is to accept the Taxing District boundaries, which would make  the town size 600 square miles (according to Bert Bertram BTAB). This would simplify the problem and would increase the number of political posts needed to run a town of that size. The big question is: will we have any say as to our future. If we are allowed to vote, will the vote count? What will be the status of the land owned by the BLM that will fall under the jurisdiction of the Town? Will the mining claims be nullified or grandfathered? There are more questions than answers to this problem.

"When I was a kid here we had two grocery stores. Now we don't have one. When the mine left here, this little town really shriveled up," Revert said. "What comes up and down 95 is all we've got." (Quote from Bobby Revert) (Ed.)In my opinion, this is a slap in the face to the Space station and the Beatty Mercantile both of which have been struggling to serve this town. I arrived here just as the Bullfrog mine was closing. I do not think this town is shriveled up. I think it is coming into its own!
