DON’T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THE TW0 VACANCIES ON THE BTAB ON THE 18TH

I had Mike Lasorsa listed as an incumbent, in the “News,” for the election on the 18th (his name appeared on the town web site as a candidate). He has since withdrawn. These are the remaining candidates: Theresa Sullivan (incumbent), Erika Gerling (past BGID treasurer), Kelly Carroll (Kelly Carroll is a long time resident and a  member of the Beatty Voluntary Fire Department) and Gary Reid.

(Ed.) This is only the second chance that we, as a town, have had a chance to select who was going to represent us on the town board. Up to last year, the choice was made by the board members, the ‘buddy’ system, and that is how we got Larry Gray and Joni Jarvis. Larry wasted a lot of time trying (unsuccessfully) to get ordinances rewritten that were his choice and did not represent the wishes of the town. When he wasn’t doing that, he was arguing with Joni and Theresa Sullivan which eventually caused him to stomp his feet and resign from the board in anger.

Now we have a second chance to choose people to represent our wishes. How do we know they will do that? We don’t. I do not believe that we have been given enough time to research these people in order to find out what they want and, if that is what we want. Look back at the last year. What has the board done, besides squabble over pennies that the fire department spent?

When you come to the meeting on the 18th, have questions ready for these candidates. If they do not represent your wishes, then do not vote for them. Good luck!

( Ed. Shirley answers my column)

First, the question concerns the UNINCORPORATED town of Beatty, NOT the township. The TOWNSHIP covers the area between the Esmeralda County line on the north, the California border on the west, then south through Amargosa Valley and on the east side of Hwy. 95 to include Mercury. The township is the area in which the Beatty Justice Court has jurisdiction. The TOWNSHIP DOES continue to exist.

The UNINCORPORATED town of Beatty was established in the early 1970's, starting at the upper Coffer ranch, south on both sides of Hwy. 95, through the airport. Later, it was expanded on the west side of Beatty to include the 2 ~ and 5 acre parcels released for sale by the BLM. I spoke with Deputy DA, Marla Zlotek a year ago, when the issue first arose. I gave her all the information I had and copies of some of the incorporation papers, which pertained to my home property. Apparently, the original documents were "lost" in Tonopah, because  Ms. Zlotek said, in her discourse at a recent BTAB meeting, she found only 12 documents with signatures of property owners. Originally, were documents from all property owners through Oasis Valley and Beatty, including those living out of the area. There is, or was, a map in the small room of the Community Center, showing the boundaries of the UNINCORPORATED town of Beatty.

I was on the Beatty Town Advisory Council in the early 1970's, when the new Community Center was built (now the center room, where BTAB meets), and it was found that the CC was NOT within the Beatty TOWNSITE, so the Town Advisory Council took on the task of forming the boundaries of the UNINCORPORATED town of Beatty. The town site was only a few blocks around where the Exchange Club stands.

One of the issues is the AD VALOREM TAX RATE, which is higher WITHIN the unincorporated town than OUTSIDE the unincorporated town. Also, those who live OUTSIDE the unincorporated town may not be able to serve on the Beatty Town Advisory Board. Ms. Zlotek assured us this last condition will be resolved, and the current Board is not in jeopardy. So, you have three different factors here: the TOWNSHIP, the UNINCORPORATED TOWN and the original TOWN SITE.

The LIBRARY DISTRICT covers the entire Beatty tax district, so anyone living in that district can have a say in how the library is run and serve on the Library Board of Trustees. I included the entire tax district when creating the Library District, so the library would have access to a larger tax base and would serve more of the public. The WATER & SANITATION DISTRICT, I believe, covers only the area where the water and sewer lines run and water is metered. Even though I own property in Beatty, I cannot vote or serve on the Water Board, because I do not live WITHIN the Water District. The GENERAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT is also an independent district. After all this, I do not see how the boundaries of Beatty affect the independent DISTRICTS. or precludes them from doing business as usual until the town boundaries are decided upon. Remember, Charlie, these delineations are what used to be..with the issue of the new boundaries, it might be changed, but that remains to be seen.

The park was in bad shape over Beatty Days. They got a load of dirt 2 days before Beatty Days it was dumped on the sidewalks on Lewis  street and left their for the weekend. So all weekend long people trying to walk around the park couldn’t use that part of the sidewalk. You had to walk in the street to get around this pile. And their was still a small pile left on the sidewalk on 3rd street. Will this all be moved by spring? And wile i was walking through the park on Beatty Days and damm neer twisted an ankle. This is all because of the ruts left in the park after they had a cement truck drive over the grass. I will say it again this is the worst the park has ever looked with the worst board and employees. Its time for a new board and employees. Now to Beatty Days it was a great turn out. Really good food and vender’s except one. To the chamber good job. I have one complaint thought the bed races poor turn out for this event maybe next year try some outhouse races or some thing. Beatty Days great event bad park.     Bob Redland

Are you satisfied with the way that the Beatty Town Advisory Board has been operating?  If not, then you have a chance to be heard and to choose who will represent you for the next two years.  There will be an informal election Wednesday night at 6:30 PM to fill two vacancies on the Board.  You have four volunteers to choose from and your vote will count to determine who will fill those vacancies.

This is your town and this is your chance to make a difference.  Make your voice heard and be the one to choose your representatives.  Let’s encourage everyone to come out and vote on November 18, 2009 at the Community Center.  The meeting starts at 6:30PM and voting begins shortly after that.  See you there!
Bert

To my fellow Beatty residents. I am asking for your vote on November 18th in the election of Beatty Town Advisory Board member. I have lived in Beatty for 28 years and during that time, I have served in many voluntary positions, committees and as an elected official. These positions included Boy Scout Committee Chairman, Little League President, PTA President and BGID member, to name a few. Anyone who knows me knows that I care deeply about our community and that I have always been willing to help wherever needed.  I have no personal agenda for wanting to be on the Beatty Town Advisory Board, except to help make Beatty a better place for all who choose to make it their home. I am a common sense, practical person.  I believe in looking for solutions and outcomes that benefit and express the desires of the majority of those in our community.During my many years of service, I have proven myself to be a thoughtful, inclusive and pragmatic member of our community. If elected, I will continue to listen to all sides and make decisions based on the overall good of the community.I hope I can count on your support.  A vote for me is a vote for you and for a better Beatty.See you on November 18th.  If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them at the election or you can call me at 553-2339.

THE WALMART SYNDROME

When Walmart comes to town, small businesses shut down. I’m sure (uhuh) that this is not Walmart’s intention, but it is a fact. There is an example of this phenomenon in Beatty. The Burro RV park is building a Laundromat. Will this impact JR”s long standing laundry. You bet it will. RVers used to take their laundry to JR’s, but now they won’t have to. Was this a deliberate act of greed or sign of good business?  You’d have to ask Ed that question.

 OUR JUNIOR SENATOR

Isn’t it nice that Nevada has been in the news lately? Unfortunately Senator Ensign has made the 15 MOST CORRUPT SENATORS LIST. Does this matter to the Senator? Apparently not as he has not resigned although he has been asked to do so for the good of the party. Could he be staying on just so that he can repay his step daddy’s payoff to his cuckolded best friend? What an ass hole! (Ed.) There is a rumor that Sarah Palin is considering running in the upcoming Nevada Republican Primary. Talk about a news story! Hmmmm.
