You Know You're in a Small Town When ...

The city limits sign is printed on both sides of the same post. You plug in your electric razor in a motel and the street lights dim. The town square is actually a phone booth. The sheriff, the deputy, and the street cop are all the same person and can be seen on Wednesdays only. The Wal-Mart, the local grocery, and UPS all have the same telephone number. The local doctor, the veterinarian (same person) still makes house calls.

 BUTCH BORASKY

Here’s another reason to not vote for Butch. At the last Commissioners meeting Butch complained that the elevation of some county employees to a new category was too expensive. Joni Eastley (Chairman) had to remind him that there would be no cost to the County (which was noted in the agenda which he obviously hadn’t read)

 MALICIOUS AND WILLFUL

NRS 203.010  Breach of peace.  Every person who shall maliciously and willfully disturb the peace or quiet of any neighborhood or person or family by loud or unusual noises, or by tumultuous and offensive conduct, threatening, traducing, quarreling, challenging to fight, or fighting, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
[1911 C&P § 327; RL § 6592; NCL § 10275]—(NRS A 1967, 489; 1971, 150)

(ED.)This is the statute under which KC’s Outpost was cited. I would question whether the band and KC’s, were being willful and malicious. They were providing entertainment for the pleasure of the people and not to anger anyone. I do not believe that a citation was warranted and I further believe that the officer was not acting in accordance with the statute.

 EMAIL

Hey Charlie. I am writing about a recent publication. Someone told me that not long ago there was an article in your paper about how a BGID board member recently built a shed and how ironic it was that they painted it the same color as the buildings in the park.

Now I didn’t get a chance to see said article, but I just want to clarify that if  this was stated, that believe it or not that retailers do have more than one can of paint  that color. Imagine that! Our paint was purchased for our private use. The BGID did not pay for it. Now, as I stated, I didn’t read the article and I don’t know if this is a valid claim, but I do want to clarify the claim if it was made. I think it is sad that in our troubled times that someone has nothing to do but try to start rumors without verifying them. Dorothy Harmon

Dear Editor,

On November 2nd I was in Pahrump and noticed that NDOT is finally repairing the shoulders on Highway 160 on the North end of town. The roadway along that stretch had a drop-off on the shoulder that was as much as one foot deep in places. (As reported earlier in The Beatty News). I wish I could give NDOT a big 'Atta boy' but I won't. I wrote to NDOT in Carson City about 5 years ago and reported this dangerous condition and it was ignored. Unfortunately several people have been killed and injured as a result of this situation. The NHP usually says that the reasons for these accident were unknown. However, rightfully placing the blame of the accident on the road condition would implicate their employer, the Great State of Nevada. It's a disgrace that this situation has gone on so long. I will give Brad Hunt and his crew an 'Atta boy' for their work. You will never see roadways around Beatty in that sort of condition. Mark Holloway

Jay Harvey talked to Nanette Graham in Las Vegas and told her about the dangerous road condition existing on highway 160 north of Home Depot. She was unaware of the problem and after Jay “talked” to her, she said that the problem would be corrected. Jay informed me that he observed the road crews re-gradeing the shoulder to make the road safer. Good job Jay!

 JOKES

Three old guys are out walking.
First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?'
Second one says, 'No, it's Thursday!'
Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer.'

Valley Electric Association (VEA) has called an immediate halt to site visits and installations of the Domestic Solar Water Heating program due to newly implemented permitting fees, regulations and requirements by the Nye County Planning Department.

On October 26th, 2009 VEA was informed through an outside source that Nye County was implementing permitting fees, requiring drawings and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) stamp of approval for each domestic solar water heater. These new demands will add approximately $400 to the cost of each system, in turn, adding an additional $2 million to the program. It is our opinion that the planning department views this program simply as a way to generate additional revenues to the county.

These additional costs have, in essence, rendered the program unfeasible, says Thomas Husted, CEO Valley Electric Association. "We have been asked to temporarily suspend the program until the county can reverse the planning department ruling. If these fees and regulations stay intact, we will have no choice but to suspend the program indefinitely." We are now being told by the County that we can install solar hot water systems in Beatty and Amargosa, as those towns do not fall under the Pahrump Planning Department's jurisdiction.

Aaron Guerro  (13yo, Born in Beatty) 1651 Monk Ave. Is the Essay Contest winner. There were three judges: Myself, Kay Tarr and Bill Hamilton. The essays were unsigned so the contestants were not known to the judges. Aaron is holding the Hewlett Packard laptop he won. Now, he says, he can talk to people. The computer was an anonymous gift.
