SOLAR MILLENNIUM

The proposed solar plant in Amargosa Valley has hit a snag. Their preferred method of cooling is by water. The plants would consume 1.3 billion gallons of water/year. That’s about 20% of the available supply. In California, solar developers have already been forced to switch to less water-intensive technologies when local officials have refused to turn on the tap. Other big solar projects are mired in disputes with state regulators over water consumption. Joni Eastley, chairman of the county commission in Nye County, Nev., which includes Amargosa Valley, said at one hearing, that her area had been “inundated” with requests from renewable energy developers that “far exceed the amount of available water.” There is technology (much like a car’s radiator) that is cheaper to use but more expensive to build and therefore is not as profitable. ((ED) Will Amargosa be able to support a plant that will sell most of its energy to California?

Hi Charley

Another thing I wanted to tell you is that bunches of people I have talked to think that this guy who is complaining about the music from KC's being too loud is a person who NEEDS TO GET A LIFE !!!! There was a petition being circulated to tell this guy to knock it off. We all LIKE the music and have no trouble sleeping at all; in fact it helps us sleep! We demand that the music continues!!! We are happy to see a business in our little town doing well in these troubled economic times. A lot of us in town wholeheartedly support KC's Outpost. I wish  the  police  or the judge or whomever levies the fines would not do so anymore. I have heard that not only were the owners of KC's fined this last weekend but the band was fined also!!! This is just insane! How much are they going to be fined this weekend during Beatty Days? Kay Tarr

 Good morning Charlie.

First I want to thank you for your paper; it is one of my weekly highlights.

I am writing to discuss the problem at The Outpost and live music.  I have been a resident of Beatty for 26 years and we have always had live music events without any problems, at one time we actually closed the street and had dancing in the streets, why is it a problem now for this nice couple who are trying to improve their business and also help Beatty grow. These people took an eyesore of a property and with their own money and considerate amount of hard work and time made a nice respectable business. Your paper has printed many letters from locals and tourists who praise their service and the quality of their food. I attended the hoe down on Saturday and found the music neither distasteful nor too loud, what I saw was people who were enjoying themselves and having some fun, something rare is this economy. What is going to happen on Beatty Days with live music in the park?  Will the Chamber receive a citation? These events are expensive and we should all be thankful that Karl and Carol and the chamber take the time to bring these events to our little community.

Thanks
Michael Kerr

ARE WE LIVING IN BEATTY?

According to Marla Zlotek (Assistant DA), we aren’t. Beatty is an unformed, unincorporated town that has no boundaries. What exactly does that mean? It means that any legal document that specifies the town limits is questionable. It means that the BTAB, BGID, LIBRARY DISTRICT, SCHOOL DISTRICT, WATER DISTRICT or any other organization in the town limits, may not have the legal authority to act. Does this mean that any document that specifically names Beatty is null and void?

This action was brought about when the BTAB was laying out the boundaries for the Open Space Plan. (That defines land that cannot be used for anything other than recreational) The boundaries were then handed over to the District Attorney and that is where the problems arose. (More to come)

DISTURBING THE PEACE

That was the complaint brought by Don Wiley (again) resulting in citations for KC’S and for the band. Carol claims that the amplifier was at its lowest setting and still be on. This is the second citing and the bail was $380. Carol is wondering what will happen during Beatty Days, when the bands start playing. After the citing, Carol had to close down for the evening. This was an anniversary celebration with over 100 people in attendance and the shutdown cost a loss in business. JOKES

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.’ Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.' 'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks. 'No, I can remember it.' 'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?' He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.' 'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.

Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!' Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.'Where's my toast?’

THE WHITE HAT

I saw the white hat at the last moment before I ran  Puerto Rico Fred down. He was walking with traffic so he didn’t see me coming. Had it not been for the hat, I would have hit him. Fred has become a “walker”. We have seen a lot of these derelicts over the years. They have given up and are walking to their graves. The streets of Beatty are dark. Do not go out on them in dark clothing and always walk facing traffic. (please)
