EDITORIAL COMMENT First, I’d like to apologize for last week’s paper. My printer broke down and you saw the result. I have repaired the problem and (I hope) it wont happen again. THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE SECRETARY OF STATE VERIFYING THE RECALL ELECTION FOR COMMISSIONER BUTCH BORASKY September
15, 2009
. WHAT IS IT WE WANT FROM OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS? Most of us vote for a person because of the way they look and we rely on that as a “litmus” test. We think that we can judge a person solely by how they look and that is how they will perform. Then we bitch because they have failed to live up to the picture we have painted. Do our elected officials consider what we want and vote accordingly? In the case of Boris Borasky I guess not. He rearranged the ordinance that allowed the “prison” to be built in Pahrump. He voted himself a 20 per cent raise during these difficult times. What would have happened if he had asked us? I guess we will never know now and his recall is therefore justified. I believe that when we speak out, things happen. The politicians may not like it and they may call us names but we will have our say. Now Borasky is challenging the right of the voters to have him recalled. This is a good example of a politician who doesn’t listen to the people who voted for him. I got a phone call from a reader who is taking the threat of a law suit to force NFW (Nevada Fish & Wildlife) to place the Amargosa Toad on the endangered species list. This reader saw several dead Toads’ in the Amargosa River bottom below Fluorspar (Crowell) Rd. It was this reader’s opinion that the dam at this site is the cause of the decimation of the Toad. |
The dam is the work of Brad Hunt (NDOT), the BLM and the Best of the Desert Race that paid for this dam. Is placing this Town’s future in jeopardy, the price we must pay so that Ed Ringle can fill all his rooms for one day? EMAILS
Alaska Tom had been in the liquor business for 25 years. Finally sick of the stress he quits his job and buys 50 acres of land in Alaska as far from humanity as possible. He sees the postman once a week and gets groceries once a month. Otherwise it's total peace and quiet. After six months or so, of almost total isolation, someone knocks on his door. |

He opens it and a huge, bearded man standing there. "Name's Lars, your neighbor from forty miles up the road. Having a Christmas party Friday night... Thought you might like to come. About 5:00." "Great", says Tom, "after six months out here I'm ready to meet some local folks. Thank you." As Lars is leaving, he stops. "Gotta warn you.....be some drinkin ". "Not a problem" says Tom. "After 25 years in the business, I can drink with the best of 'em." Again, the big man starts to leave and stops. "More 'n' likely gonna be some fightin' too." "Well, I get along with people, I'll be all right. I'll be there, Thanks again." "More'n likely be some wild sex, too," "Now that's really not a problem" says Tom, warming to the idea "I've been all alone for six months! I'll definitely be there. By the way, what should I wear?" "Don't much matter ..... Just gonna be the two of us." Mark Holloway [Tumbleweed@arholloway.com] COMMUNITY INFORMATION SOLAR MILLENNIUM The whole gang was back for a repeat performance, but in this one you were allowed to speak. Most of the viable complaints centered around the location of the plant. Apparently the plan straddles Farm Road, which is a major artery for the town. All traffic, not going to the plant, will have to detour a great distance around to arrive at the same place, that had been a direct route. Most of the audience said they were either for (jobs) or against Environmental and safety and water etc.) Chukar season opens Oct. 10 and runs through Feb. 7. Start planning online, where you’ll find the complete Chukar Forecast, distribution map, seasons and regulations and more at ndow.org/hunt/resources/Wildlife_Heritage/upland_game/. (I hope the hunters stay away from the Pond!)
A problem has been brought to light by one of my readers, Jay Harvey. Jay pointed out the poor condition of Highway 160 North to highway 95. If you look carefully at the road shoulder just past the Home Depot, you will see that it is eroding away. This photo shows the difference between the roadway and the surface of the shoulder and emphasized the almost 12 inch drop-off. If you are unfortunate enough to drop into this trench at highway speeds, you will not be able to avoid veering across the highway into oncoming traffic as you try to get back on the road. The condition of this road is a good example of the way NDOT distributes its wealth. For example: going South of Pahrump, highway 160 is a well paved road that is wide and with a broad shoulder then it turns into a four lane highway. As far as NDOT is concerned, Beatty residents live in the “third world”. We are forgotten.

If you want more proof here it is. At the Town Meeting on Wednesday the 23rd , this reporter listened to Tom Chase (Nevada Health Centers) and our own Sam Brashear’s (Beatty Health and Welfare) explain why Beatty isn’t going to get included in NHC”s grant request for 12 million dollars to build a new clinic. It seems that Tom decided that adding Beatty to the request would jeopardize the grant request. There you go folks. I wonder why it never occurred to Tom (or Sam) that the amounts allocated for Las Vegas and Carson City could have been reduced enough to allow a new clinic for Beatty?
