I was asked a question by a reader who was concerned as to why the High School had to replace the turf on the football field when it had only recently been sodded. Nancy Hein, Principal, says that the our native soil was not suitable to the sod and therefore the soil was replaced and the area resurfaced.

Solar millennium has decided to have their Beatty meeting again. It will be on the 22nd of September.

SCHOOLS ARE OPEN Be aware that all Beatty’s schools are open. These kids don’t know what it feels like when a car hits them. Please don’t be the one who teaches them. Slow down in school zones and watch out for them to leap out at you in your blind spot. Try to imagine how it would be to have them in your memory forever.

HAROLD AND THE URANIUM MINE
The French’s, Mike and Peg and their friends, Billy and Sharon and their 5 dogs, including 12 year old Chow, Harold, were out for a day hike this summer. They were driving up past the Beatty Water Board on Indian Springs Road. They stopped a few miles before the Springs and, along with Harold, began to walk up to the uranium mine. It was a good hike, all uphill. When they got to the mine portal they went in. They explored the mine and then climbed up to the other adits. After exploring for a while they realized that Harold had disappeared. They began to search all over the area, which included a trip back to their vehicles. Walking back up the mountain they met two of their party. They had heard a bark and located Harold, with the aid of a pen light, in the bottom of a shaft. They carefully went to the lip of the shaft and hearing whimpers peered down. About 50 feet below they spied Harold. He was whimpering and looking up at them. There wasn’t anything that they could do except stare down and listen to his cries. They decided to call their friend and neighbor Lieutenant Frank Jarvis. Frank got rescue supplies and met them at the mine. Some of them stayed to keep Harold company while they waited for Frank. When Frank arrived they hurried into the mine. Frank asked if the dog was still alive and was told him that he was.  They had a weapon just in case they weren’t able to successfully rescue Harold.! Frank got busy and fashioned a noose in the end of a rope. He used a stick to keep the loop open and began to lower it into the shaft.

The rope fell on the dog but Frank was having trouble getting Harold to step into the noose around his body. Finally, in desperation, he dropped the noose over the dog’s neck. They then began to throw pebbles down in the hope that Harold would step into the noose that was loosely around his neck. Finally, after several attempts, Harold stepped one leg through the noose and Frank tightened it around his body. Frank then began to carefully lift the heavy burden up the shaft. As the dog neared the top, they reached down and pulled him to safety. As soon as Harold was released from the noose, he ran out of the mine with his tail wagging, but with one leg dragging. The French’s then carried their beloved pet down the mountain to their car and drove to the vet for an overnight stay in Las Vegas. Harold suffered a broken leg but was otherwise not injured. Harold has fully recovered now and will not be going into any more mines.

EMAIL

I am writing this letter to complain about the Beatty Park. Why is it with 2 employees they can’t keep up on the work? They trimmed some trees on the 31st of August and it took until September 1 to pick them up. Some of the limbs were left lying on the sidewalks, so if someone wanted to walk around the park they would not be able to use the sidewalks. The restrooms look bad do they get cleaned? And what about adding some sinks they are needed. with no sinks to wash your hands, how do the people who do fund raising food serving at the park keep from spreading germs by not having a place to wash their hands? The picnic tables look good, but the slabs they are sitting on have drop offs with makes a bad hazard. These are the tables up on Lewis and 4Th St. Now with all the tables being new why isn't any of the tables ADA compliant? And why is there not any ADA compliant parking? I feel sorry for anyone with a wheelchair that tries to use the Beatty Park. Instead of spending money on lights they should have made the park accessable to the disabled. And why at the so called Lions shade have some of the rails been cut out and the ones on the ground left? Makes another nice tripping hazard. And last does anyone on the board or that works at the park know how to pull weeds?                                                  Bob Redland
