ANOTHER VANDALISM REPORT

 Dear Kay,
After over four years of no signal coming into Beatty from the National Public Radio affiliate in Las Vegas, KNPR, which broadcasts news and information programming, the translator/transmitter that was supposed to
be working was put back into service about a month ago, thanks to the efforts of Jerry Hammes making contact with KNPR's engineers and making a contribution. Then over a week ago, the signal went silent again. An e-mail notification was sent to the station on August 5 to notify them that the signal was off again. On Monday, August 10, the signal was restored. Here is what was reported as the reason it had gone down again:    Some other user of the site disconnected our receive antenna for    reasons unknown. Because this is an unattended automatic site. we    rely on listeners to inform us of such outages. Your help is greatly    appreciated by everyone at KNPR. — Joe Sands, Chief Engineer. The KNPR person who was initially contacted also replied with this report:    The Beatty translator is back on the air. Our engineer reports that    someone disconnected the receive antenna at the transmitter site.    Don’t know why. Maybe someone up there is not a public radio fan.
—Phil Burger, Nevada Public Radio this was done not by a /non-fan of public radio/, but by some very sick
bastard who gets his kicks in destroying anything good for others. How long will it take before this sicko obstructs the KNPR signal once again? Or how long is it going to take for the base vandals trying to deface and destroy the park, Rhyolite, whatever else in our area, before something is done
to apprehend and severely punish them? KNPR is at 91.7 on the FM band.

Ed. In other words, you can speak but only if the commissioners approve of what you are going to say. Hey. Talk about crowd control!

If you attended the Solar Millennium meeting last Monday the 17th in the Community center, you saw this censorship in action. What these people are saying is: we don’t have time to waste listening to your comments. Just sit there and Shut Up! I would advocate not attending any meeting that won’t let the people speak except the meeting would go on without us and maybe that is what they want!

Its raise time--I note that Gus Sullivan got a raise: he’s now making $74,000/year(not counting his retirement)Not bad. I wonder how we can afford that. (whoops, sorry, he’s only making $73,999 (this isn’t as bad as it looks since Sandra Merlino (County Clerk) is making the same, $73,999. All the commissioners  got raises to $24,642.24. These raises are shocking in lieu of economic conditions in America, but the most shocking was Bob Becket (District Attorney) who was raised to $112,042.  Pam Webster (Assistant County Manager, Janet Rogers boss), is now earning $58.88/hour. ($118,23.04/year)
