June 19, 2009 advertising rates- $5/week $17/month CORRECTION—Bobby Marchand is the Treasurer of the BGID and not the Secretary as I reported in last week’s News. Dear Beatty Town Board, I would like to apply for the vacancy on the Beatty Town Board. I am a registered voter and have been a resident of Beatty for more than 10 years & am a tax paying property owner. I was on the BTAB from late 2000 to early 2004 first as a member then as Vice Chair. I feel like I could be an asset to the board with new blood & fresh ideas. I also strongly believe a board member should be for the residents & town, not for a personal agenda or gain! Thank you for considering my request. Terry E. Kurfess

Dear Board Members, (Ed. This is Dave Spicer’s agreement to clean up the roads used by the “Best in The Desert racers”)
Casey Folks has contracted my organization to reclaim the "Best in the Desert" race track immediately after the event in the Beatty/Southern Nye area. All reclamation will be done to Federal Standards as directed by the Bureau of Land Management. Our agreement directs special attention to be given to roads that are used by the public, particularly, Fluorspar Canyon Road. We are in agreement with this action, as it supports our land use practices.
This letter also stands as support for the "Vegas to Reno" race. Important economic benefits of commerce and donations come to our community during this event. We will continue to work with the BLM and State agencies in routing the race across our mine sites, Rights-of-Ways, and roads to ensure less environmental as well as public impact. By working together with public land users, whether they be a mine, solar power, wind power, Rights-of-Way, recreational trails, or a race we can achieve the diversity of the "Multiuse" concept. The land use proponent, as well as our community, prosper together. You may have heard about the money that the State is trying to refund. To find out if you are a recipient, go to stakeyourclaim.gov Have you noticed that the access road that starts at the bridge and runs between the NDOT yard and the river has been blocked by some very large boulders? It would seem that Brad Hunt ordered the placement of the boulders to prevent damage to the trees that were planted by the Habitat Committee along the NDOT fence. BGID MEETING LAST FRIDAY. Most of the meeting time was spent interviewing applicants for the two openings. The positions were awarded to Ezra Goff and Neil King. They started last Monday. Mike Aragon will supervise and evaluate them. Another item on the agenda concerns the vandalism of the park. It seems to be getting out of control. The gates have been kicked so hard as to make them difficult to operate. One faucet was also broken off and had to be replaced. The Board voted to write letters to all the BTAB members and to the County Manager and all the members of the BOCC and express their disdain over this vandalism. (Ed. To Parents. Please tell your children that their neighbors built the park for the entertainment and for use by the whole community. Vandalism, like what is going on at the park, whether it is done by adults or children is making the wrong statement. We want visitors to see a well maintained and clean park for everybody’s use. “Don’t destroy what you use.” Included in these letters will be a complaint against Janet Rogers, Ricardo Lopez and Mike Lasorsa. It seems that these individuals painted over, or caused to be painted over, the phone number of the Town Office, when they were informed that the BGID, which owns the property, would be taking on the responsibility of accepting moneys for its use in the future. The complaint will also include a police statement pertaining to the incident. According to Mike Lasorsa, “I agreed, with Janet (Rogers), that she should paint over the Town’s phone number because it was no longer valid. There was no intent to vandalize the park; it was done as required after I received the letter from the BGID.” Mike added, “If someone from the BGID had called me prior to the letter, this could have all been avoided.” |

Sir, As a resident of Beatty, I am familiar with your weekly publication. While I don't always agree with it, I don't always disagree, either. In fact, quite often, I don't even understand it. What is important, though, is that it exists, and continues to do so. With that thought in mind, I felt that you would be interested in reading this article from today's New York Post. I hope it provides you with both edification and encouragement. Regards, John Cobert This is your new BGID board. From left to right, Mary Revert (secretary), Mike Harmon (member), Maxine Makinster (chair) and Bobby Marchand (treasurer)
